Winter 2015 Student Learning Goal: “Musical Theater: Mostly Broadway”

Winter 2015 Student Learning Goal:
Musical Theater: Mostly Broadway”

OVERVIEW
Each year, Nessacus Instrumental Music students engage in an exploration of an aspect of music- music history/culture, genre or style.  Explorations are a big part of the learning process during this time and students become creators and performers for these projects.
A concert is usually presented by several performing groups at the end of March/beginning of April to coincide with MUSIC IN OUR SCHOOL’S MONTH. While all students participate in the unit and learn through exploration and creating/performing (and recording) in lessons, not all groups will necessarily perform at the concert. This year the performing groups will include the 7th Grade and 8th Grade Bands . This year’s concert is scheduled for April 1st. (The next concert after that is May 28th- The Spring Concert.)
Recent themes included: MUSIC IN AMERICA and MUSIC FROM FILMS. This year’s theme is ‘MOSTLY BROADWAY’ which will include an exploration of Musical Theater-in particular Musical Theater as it developed in America on Broadway.

THE GOAL(s)
Students will….

  • be able to describe the origins of stage musicals as they developed in America.
  • be able to locate Broadway on a map.
  • be able to provide some examples of how musicals match the times in which they take place.
  • be able to identify the various ART DISCIPLINES that combine to form Musical Production.
  • be able to identify at least 6 jobs one could find in the Musical Theater world.
  • be able to perform-sing or play- at least 4 melodies from various musicals.
  • be able to name Musical Theater venues in Berkshire County and nearby.
  • Choose a topic related to musical theater to become expert on and produce a product of some kind. Default is a blog post on the Shared Blog site for this project. (Other ideas are on the project page-page 2).
